Target has found itself at the center of controversy over a children’s Halloween costume. It has since removed it from its website, issuing a public apology after critics called the product’s imagery racially insensitive.
The image on Target’s website showed a Black child modeling the costume in a pose that critics said evoked racist imagery associated with the Jim Crow and minstrel eras, according to Forbes. Such depictions historically relied on demeaning stereotypes and exaggerated portrayals of Black people.
“As a company, we know we got this wrong, and we are deeply sorry,” Target said in a statement to Forbes. “The costume is offensive and should never have been part of our assortment. It is no longer available for sale. We know this is especially hurtful for our Black guests, team members, and partners. Removing the costume is an important first step, and the company is looking closely at how this happened and what needs to change to ensure this won’t happen again.”
Target’s DEI Controversy Predates Costume Backlash
Forbes noted that the controversy surrounding Target highlights the potential consequences companies can face when they retreat from previously stated values and commitments. The outlet pointed to Target’s rollback of its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, arguing that removing such efforts can also eliminate guardrails designed to promote equity — an issue the retailer has faced criticism over.
As AFROTECH™ previously reported, Target announced in early 2025 that it was scaling back several of its DEI initiatives. The move included ending programs aimed at increasing representation among Black employees and expanding opportunities for Black- and minority-owned businesses to have their products sold in Target stores. The shift came years after the retailer pledged in 2020 to invest $2 billion in Black-owned businesses by the end of 2025, following the murder of George Floyd.
In response to Target’s DEI rollback, Rev. Jamal Bryant launched a boycott of the retailer. The company subsequently faced declining foot traffic and sales, AFROTECH™ noted, losing roughly $12 billion.
While Target has maintained its rollback of DEI initiatives and related policies, Bryant ended the boycott in March 2026 following what he described as “productive” conversations with the retailer, AFROTECH™ reported.
How Retracting DEI Policies Can Create Costly Blind Spots
Still, Target’s latest controversy raises questions about whether the retailer has fully learned from the criticism it has faced.
Companies must ensure equity is considered throughout the product development process, from who is involved in ideation to who ultimately approves what reaches consumers, Forbes notes. Researchers, equity-focused experts and diverse decision-makers can help identify potential blind spots before they become larger issues.
Without formalized processes and accountability structures, companies risk falling short of their stated commitments. Some online critics have argued that if Target had maintained stronger DEI infrastructure, additional safeguards or perspectives may have flagged concerns about the costume imagery before it reached the retailer’s website, the outlet reports.
For corporations, embedding equity into workplace culture and decision-making can help identify blind spots, mitigate reputational risk, and build stronger relationships with consumers.
“A Jim Crow-era minstrel costume is not simply getting it wrong. It is a profoundly harmful symbol of racism that should never have been designed, approved, or sold by Target,” Bryant told NPR. “It shows that Target still lacks corporate diversity among decision-makers and needs concrete internal change.”
